Bug#607767: Blank screen on starting X with Dual 2 GHz G5 and X800XT; DRM module not loading for radeon driver



Some progress.

I did sudo apt upgrade and let the machine do it's thing.

I can modprobe radeon with no problems. Doing so returns:

I didn't see any difference in the logs after "sudo mount -o remount, sync /", but perhaps I don't know where to look.

Commenting out "AGPMode" and changing it to "4" didn't change anything. I checked the logs and verified the changes. When commenting out AGPMode entirely, the machine defaulted to AGP 8x. When setting AGPMode to 4x, the machine chose 4x.

However, forcing the bus type to PCI did allow a screen to be drawn, albeit a garbled one. Looking at the log, the physical size is being set to 444 x 277. Picture of garbled screen, Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf attached.

modification is taking effect as intended.

It would also be interesting to see updated kernel output, at least the
AGP/DRM related bits.

You might be able to get more complete logs after a lockup by running

       sudo mount -o remount,sync /

before reproducing the problem.

I meant to add that since the drivers you're using are rather old,
there's a good chance your problem could be solved by upgrading the
kernel and/or X driver.
