If you just modprobe radeon first, do things keep working until you try
to start X?

Does commenting out Option "AGPMode" help? If not, does using "4"
instead of "8" for its value help? If not, does Option "BusType" "PCIE"
help? In each case please verify in the Xorg.0.log file that the
modification is taking effect as intended.

It would also be interesting to see updated kernel output, at least the
AGP/DRM related bits.

You might be able to get more complete logs after a lockup by running

        sudo mount -o remount,sync /

before reproducing the problem.
