Samba is 12 years old, yes.
And attending Tridge explaining Samba's history at 2002 Samba XP
conference was one of my best experience in a free software
conference, despite his damn australian accent..:-)
Samba is older than Win95, fore sure. Tridge wrote it for using files
on his mainframe from a Win3 computer (or maybe even a Dos computer
running Lan Manager).
