I fully second and support this. While I do not have an incluence in
the NM process (mainly because I cannot find the time to prepare
adequatly), I make an effort to sponsor people I've seen making
interesting contributions. At other times, I have handed off one of
my projects for the scholar to continue. In all cases, I have tried
to act as a mentor, supervising their work, providing helpful
advice, identifying problems, and letting them do their own work
without too much of my influence. From what I can tell, it has
always worked very well, and I feel like I have very good relations
with my sponsorees. And I've profitted a lot from their work (e.g.
spampd, postgrey, davfs2, fuse, grsecurity, vimoutliner, zsync)
because I needed it and would not have found the time to package it
myself. Anyway, 'nuff said...

... I really like this proposal of yours, AJ.
