I had no idea the X server was keeping a log under my home directory as well. I'd only been looking in /var/log. And yes, the log under my home directory *is* showing for the older (working) kernel.
Now that I have both logs, I'll just attach them. Hopefully
that's okay. They're not all that large.
What I'm noticing is that the older one, the one that works, doesn't say it's loading nouveau at all, even though it's there in lsmod. And the newer kernel, that loads nouveau, also tried to load nv which fails. Except when I Google module nv, I see that it's supposedly an ancient module that's been out of use for some time. So I'm even more confused about what's going on.
