Looking at the archive, it appears this message never made it.  Perhaps attachments aren't allowed after all so I'll remove them.

Can you show the output of ls -l ~/.local/share/xorg/ /var/log/X*

Sure.

malabar> ls -l ~/.local/share/xorg/ /var/log/X*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 58901 Jul 12 10:37 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 60164 Jul 12 10:26 /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 58790 Jul 12 10:37 /var/log/Xorg.1.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 62612 Jul 12 10:26 /var/log/Xorg.1.log.old

/home/dab/.local/share/xorg/:
total 264
-rw-r--r-- 1 dab dab 76312 Jul 12 11:47 Xorg.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 dab dab 76246 Jul 12 10:36 Xorg.0.log.old
-rw-r--r-- 1 dab dab 59660 May 10  2019 Xorg.1.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 dab dab 50131 May  9  2019 Xorg.1.log.old

I had no idea the X server was keeping a log under my home directory as well.  I'd only been looking in /var/log.  And yes, the log under my home directory *is* showing for the older (working) kernel.

Now that I have both logs, I'll just attach them.  Hopefully that's okay.  They're not all that large.

What I'm noticing is that the older one, the one that works, doesn't say it's loading nouveau at all, even though it's there in lsmod.  And the newer kernel, that loads nouveau, also tried to load nv which fails.  Except when I Google module nv, I see that it's supposedly an ancient module that's been out of use for some time.  So I'm even more confused about what's going on.

Thanks,
Dave
