I think it depends on their size whether they make it through.

As Greg explained, X running as a user can only write under ~,
whereas /var/log/ was the traditional location when running as
root.

I don't know, but I don't run a DM; I start X with startx, so that
question never arises.

I agree. My reaction to discovering this might be to ssh into the
computer from another one, and look at what processes are running
and which files they have open, all while logging in through the DM.
