Perhaps I was confusing here. What I meant was that o gave a list of
files in its current directory, whereas O gave both that list
(labelled Files) and another pane of directories (labelled Directories).

With repeated use, o sometimes gave one pane, sometimes two.
O always gave two.
o is given twice in the man page, once under Key Bindings,
later under Default Key Bindings where it is joined by O.
The actions specified by o/O aren't distinguished.
As I pointed out, I'm no expert with opening files like this,
so I can't help if there are unknown bugs or (mis)features.

Yes, its current directory is the last one navigated to, and
starts at the directory containing the file originally opened,
or the shell's pwd if there wasn't one.
