Whitelist it. A file should be called
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.thunderbird.

echo 1 > /sys/block/sdb/device/delete
Assuming that your SATA controller is sane, it'll powerdown the drive
until the next reboot or SATA bus scan.
