It's actually a partial scanning, as can be seen with the progress bar: the scanning stops when the progress bar is at about 13% (image height is 288 pixels instead of 2295 with gray mode) independantly of any file type. It'a really a problem with the xsane on my desktop, as it works perfectly with the xscanimage program.
