Flaky SATA behavior could be a bad cable. Is your DVD drive
connected via a red cable? If so, try replacing it.

In this case I don't think so. The machine in this case is a lenovo R61 laptop purchased used a few years ago. The machines mentioned in those post all appear to be desktop machines. IIRC the cdrom drive is driven by an internal USB port. I know the hard disk is.
