For the reference, this happened by accident, the new xserver version
was meant to to go to experimental but ended up in unstable[1].

The reason being that the binNMU of xserver-xorg-video-intel failed,
because that 18 months old driver is not compatible with xserver 1.17[2].

Your system will not be dead, but if you restart X it will downgrade to
the modesetting driver (assuming there is no driver specified in
xorg.conf).
