By the way, Kent, I ran aptitude and gnome was not installed. You'll probably want to keep your replies on-list, so that any answers can be stored for later searches by others looking for the same answers you seek, and so that the whole community can provide fuller answers that what might be available just from one person. Also, on this list it's considered proper etiquette to put your responses "in line", below whatever text to which you're responding. Although it may be somewhat difficult to get used to doing, this makes it easier for people to come into the middle of a conversation and read what has transpired, top-to-bottom. Although you say gnome is not installed, you haven't let us know what was the result of "startx &". Did X start? Did you get an error message? If so, what did it say? To install gnome, you should be able to "aptitude install gnome", which I think will pull in all the gnome pieces. Others on this list can probably give you better info on this. You might could also run "tasksel" instead, which is a higher-level, menu-driven app allowing you to select various tasks you'd like to do with your computer. -- Kent
