Exactly.

Warning here: the name of the device will probably contain colons and/or
commas, which have a special meaning for MPlayer's option parsing. Look in
the doc how to replace these characters.

But first, try decoding the MP3 to WAVE and playing it with aplay.

Then directly with MPlayer.

Lastly, configuring ALSA so that the most useful output is the default is a
must. It is possible to use kernel module options to change the order of the
cards. I do not know if it is possible to used kernel module options to
change the order of the subdevices in a single card. And of course, it is
possible to edit ~/.asoundrc to change anything, but that is tricky.
