In addition to sharing files, it can do calendars, contact management, and there are a ton of other apps for it. Not to mention that since it is open source it works really well with Linux clients. Good stuff. I haven't yet put it on the VPS, but I intend to, so I can access it when I'm not at home. Well, the main server I have at home would also best be described as a (maybe mutant) franken-server, and it works just fine. OwnCloud doesn't require much in terms of hardware, although extra disk space for all that you want to store there is nice.
