Mine works with built-in laptop mic, and it also works with inexpensive
old headset (Manhattan brand) that plugs in with mini-plugs. No webcam.

Internal microphone, microphone, line in.

These don't change when the headset is plugged in.

Don't see a conflict; aplay filename.wav plays fine as do mplayer, etc.
Alsa packages installed, pasting to fit width:
