In the past I had similar problem with alsa and different users concurrently, so if you are switching from your wife's account instead of logging out you are probably facing the same kind of problem.

It doesn't matter which account to log in first.
Skype on my account doesn't recognize microphone for some reason. Other recording application works.
Skype also use Pulse audio and from ver. 4.3, skype only works with pulse audio.
