Irony and sarcasm are hard to use well in your mother tongue. They are
even harder to use in a non-native tongue.
I'm fluent enough that I can use irony in Japanese in some cases, but
I try to avoid it because it always invites misunderstandings. (And
then people think I'm being ironic when I'm being dead serious. :-/)
When talking face-to-face, you can mug or wink to flag the irony. 8-o
But we have to use irony markup or smileys to make sure it's
understand in e-mail, {irony}which takes all the fun out of
it{irony/}. :-|
