MTP was introduced in Android 3, for certain reasons.
Android 2.x still works with normal USB.
MTP was invented by Microsoft, so it only works directly in Windows.
For both Linux and OSX, a program is needed to transfer files via MTP.
For Debian there is gmtp, which is easiest. There's also mtp-tools,
requiring more study.

But there are other ways to transfer files that may work better.
You can install AirDroid in Android. It requires both PC and device to
have a WiFi connection.
Or you can use Software Data Cable in Android, that also works when
the PC has a wired ethernet connection.
