Hi
I know that there are problems with the ATI drivers on Kernel 3.x.x
Are you installing the stable version Squeeze or the forth coming
version Wheezey from testing.
That uses kernel 3 and the gnome shell 3, which is very much like a MAC
in appearance .
I don't think that graphics card is capable of accelerated / 3 Mode,
which is required for the gnome-shell 3 unfortunately.
If I was in your position I would replace that graphics card for a
Nvidia card that can support the needs of gnome-shell3.
That way you should stay future proof, for a while :)
I would defiantly recommend getting Wheezy from testing, I like it a
lot.
