IMHO there should be some hints what to do if the user currently is
running something else than GNU/Linux, like Windows or OS X.

In Mac OS-X, it should be pretty straight-forward. E.g. the "dd" command exists in standard OS-X. There may be some tricks required to write directly to a USB stick device, but I'm guessing it's not impossible.

But the real answer to your point is this: If you're thinking of running Linux, you probably have a friend who has Linux running. Friends are good things to have.
