There has been much development in gstreamer since then...

AFAIK, it has been dropped "upstream", that is, Totem dropped xine as an 
alternative backend not Debian.

If no (zero) commercial DVD works, I would open a bug report for that. 
One DVD can fail but "all" sounds a bit strange. I will try in my wheezy 
time permitting...

Test with VideoLAN but I think it will fail in the same way.
