Oops, sorry :-)

Thunderbird works natively/internally with mbox formated files so if, for 
example, you have a file ("big_gmail.mbox") with all your stored e-mails, 
to view them locally all you have to do is put that mbox file under your 
current Thunderbird folder profile (for instance, "~/.mozilla-thunderbird/
profile.default/Mail/Local Folders/gmail/big_gmail" and you are done 
(just in case, remove the ".mbox" extension if present).
