You could try posting a bug within Debian.  Maybe the package maintainer
will be more responsive than upstream, and maybe he's got some advice.

I should consider that. I'll try to put some time together to install it on a test system to see if I can figure out how to go about reporting the problem within Debian. I wasn't thinking about it from that angle.
