You can assist it: -k /path/to/kernel/source/directory

I'm not really sure a kernel built with make-kpkg produces a proper
headers package.

I don't like its interactive mode. Try using -i (--non-inter) to avoid
the full-screen nonsense.

It writes logs to under /var/cache/modass
