Hi Alex,

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that serialization is a process which converts various data types into a byte stream which can be stored and transmitted like a string.  If you had some serialized data stored in a file and you knew what scheme was used to serialize the data, you might be able to use a tool such as "dd" to decode it.  I'm not sure if there is a standard serialization encoding scheme, though, or if it is implemented differently across various programming languages.  The Wikipedia article on serialization might answer some questions:
