HPLIP driver seems *not* to be able to achieve that:

Time to think in buying another printer or setting it up in another OS to 
perform the required maintenance tasks, I guess :-(

Try to install the w2000 driver or even vista:

Quite strange there is not 32 bits driver for XP >:-? Have you contacted 
HP?
