If you have grub in MBR and in the installer you install a bootloader in the MBR, the existing one will be overwritten.

The old system may be detected automatically and an entry for it created. Even if not, you can always add it later.

Or should I install the lenny loader in its own partition and chainload
it from grub2 after booting back in my current system with (I guess) a
rescue disk? (not really sure if this is how chainloading works, bear
with my ignorance)

That's another option. Install it in the partition, your old MBR and boot loader are intact. Then you boot in the old system normally (no need for a rescue disk, your boot loader is still there) and add an entry for your new system. Either chailoading, or booting directly.

Will lenny bootloader installer see my other system and allow boot from
it as well?

Yes, you can boot several systems off one boot loader.
