Etch (oldstable) is the last release that supports booting the
installation system from floppies.
If your machine is old enough that your BIOS doesn't support booting from
CDs, then you will need to install Etch via boot floppies,
then upgrade to Lenny from Etch following the upgrade instructions.
Then if you want to migrate to Squeeze from Lenny you can do that too, but
upgrade instructions may not be available or complete for that last
upgrade. Once Squeeze becomes stable and Lenny becomes oldstable,
Etch will be dropped from the regular archive.
If your BIOS is new enough to support booting from CDs, and you have a
high-speed internet connection, the mini boot CD is what I would
recommend. For Lenny, the image can be obtained from any Debian mirror
at
dists/main/lenny/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
Burn that image to a CD-R on another machine using your favorite
CD burning software, then boot from that on your original machine.
If you want to install Squeeze, the daily builds on
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
are where you should get your boot images at this moment. The
"production" Squeeze installer is just a symbolic link to the
production Lenny installer, and it really isn't adequate to install
Squeeze.
