By the way, does anybody know why they had to break things first? I did not expect that from debian!

In this case, I believe some people (for technical reasons) disliked the current solution for ia32-*, and wanted it removed as a signal that it was not fit for a stable release. I think the release goal called multiarch for the next stable release is soppsed to be the good solution to the problems ia32-* currently solves (works around?).

Then I believe some other people felt that the current way of doing things was needed (although it had issues) until multiarch was in place, so they made sure it was reinserted into the archive.

My impression is that the present state of ia32-* and the recent handling of it should be seen as an exception to the general rule of trying not to break testing, and that you should not expect similar issues for other packages in the future.

But I am just a user reading mailing lists, so I may have misunderstood the discusion.
