I've had systems that went from hitting enter at the GRUB menu to a KDE login in 15 seconds, but took as least 30 seconds to go from hitting the power button to seeing the GRUB menu. Multi-CPU, split-bus boards with multiple cards that load BIOS extensions and greatly benefit from kexec().
