The vast majority of settings for Gnome programs are handled with gconf.
AFAIK it is not possible to install or run most Gnome apps without installing/
running gconf. I run Awesome WM, and as soon as I run a Gnome app,
gconfd-2 launches. I think if you stopped gconfd, the other apps would fail.

Other than installing g-c-c, you could install gconf-editor, which gathers the
gconf folders and xml files into a tree (it is a bit like regedit). Or
your could
sort through the ~/.gconf/ files and dirs and edit the xml manually...
