you probably already have the serial cable that goes with the gps,
second step would be to pickup something like this

most every converter ive seen is linux compatible, they usually say
something about it in their description, id check to be sure before
ordering.  where you go from there is up to you, theres a few gps
programs out there, gpsdrive and roadnav are 2 that ive used before.
