Any person living in any society is a slave to any number of things. The larger and more complicated the society, the more "things" you are slave to.

Even a hermit who lives in a cave and grows/catches his/her own food is slave to the seasons, the weather, the rising/setting of the sun, etc, etc.

I used to believe that I could be my own island, but it's just not true.
