 I notice on Ron's reply that the "how to unsubscribe" notice was
 *not* displayed, even though it's there when I look at the raw email
 source.  Probably an artifact of using HTML-formatted mail.

You are probably right. This signature seems like these email clients (e.g. Thunderbird). This would explain the confirmation message sent by him. But this doesn't explain why he can't unsubscribe - if he tried correctly.
