"Better"?  Not if you've got a heavily-burdened multi-CPU system.

But better if you want to run a desktop or heavy server apps in a
seriously RAM-limited system.

Depends on which server resources.  Apache2 is *not* known to be
light-weight.

At a minimum, you'll need to roll your own kernel, stripping out
*everything* that is not needed.  Same with the base system.  Start
stripping, and be ruthless about it.
