No need to look at /usr/share/fonts.
In /usr/local/share/fonts you could create any hierarchy you like.
A few examples:
/usr/local/share/fonts/tnrl2bi_.afm
/usr/local/share/fonts/tnrl2bi_.pfb
[..]
/usr/local/share/fonts/type1/tnrl2bi_.afm
/usr/local/share/fonts/type1/tnrl2bi_.pfb
[..]
/usr/local/share/fonts/Mowitz/tnrl2bi_.afm
/usr/local/share/fonts/Mowitz/tnrl2bi_.pfb
[..]
/usr/local/share/fonts/type1/Mowitz/tnrl2bi_.afm
/usr/local/share/fonts/type1/Mowitz/tnrl2bi_.pfb
[..]
If your last Etch update & upgrade was not very long ago (i.e. not
before the time Lenny came around) then it should 'just work'.
