sudo will work only if properly configured which is not done by default 
on Debian. I think the simplest way would be to login as root (from the 
console) and try again. Also from your explanation it seems to me that 
you rather have a monitor configuration issue. Make sure you choose the 
right sync values for your monitor.

Even better would be to reply to the list only as most of us are

As long as you provide enough details we will be able to help. If the 
dpkg-reconfigure doesn't work please provide output of

lspci -v | grep VGA
