  This is no longer the case, apt-get can do a similar thing.  For
 example upon my current system:

skx@vain:~$ apt-get install less
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
less is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libjpeg-progs jhead
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 13 not upgraded.
