Whenever I need to install nVidia drivers, I just go to their web page and download the appropriate installer for Linux. It usually compiles the drivers and installs them without any hassles. I had problems with getting the drivers from standard Debian repositories to work in the past, but the nVidia installer works all the time. I would suggest to try it and see how it goes for you.
