Have you tried it on other distros and it's different? As much as I hate to say it, many gnome programs are just useless when you need more than the basic functions that you would expect in that kind of software. You either end up looking for alternatives (xscreensaver over gnome-screensaver, alacarte over the default menu editor, etc) or doing things on command line. The situation is supposed to be changing, but the change is slow.
