I'll bite.  It does.  Install a print daemon (lpr(ng)), install
anything else that's even remotely related to printing, it drags in
CUPS, and CUPS blows away lpr(ng).

Nice.  Bug report submitted (Bug#431725), but I don't hold out much
hope for lpr*.  CUPS is cool and pointy-clicky.
