I think you need to check the following:

/etc/network/interfaces

#Typical DHCP setup
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

#Simple static
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
	address 123.234.123.234
	netmask 255.255.255.0
	gateway 123.234.123.1
	#This is needed for the resolvconf package
	#otherwise use /etc/resolv.conf
	dns-nameservers 123.123.123.1 123.123.123.2



/etc/apt/source.list

deb http://ftp.country-code.debian.org/debian etch main contrib unfree
