This indeed broke the deadlock.

> dpkg -i gtk-qt-engine_0.8~svn-rev36-2_amd64.deb

This didn't work, but I was able to work out the rest with a few
passes of aptitude.  My faith in the robustness of the Debian
packaging system has been renewed...
