I haven't followed this thread closely, but would like to add the following. See: http://bugs.debian.org/376177 The offenders are xfdesktop and xfce4-menu-plugin. To avoid the memory leak(s) until the problem is fixed, don't use xfdesktop or the xfce4 menu plugin. I read somewhere that the memory leak(s) may be fixed in version 4.4.1, so perhaps the version in unstable will fix the problem... please add to the bug report what you discover.
