Yes, I believe it is the 2.6.20 that changed it.  As for labels, no they
are not required, but quite easy to change with e2label and then when
you click Storage Devices in Konqueror, you'll see the names of the HD
partitions instead of just the size.  Much easier to find what you're
looking for that way.

Some distributions do require labels at format time, or at least they
did.  I wouldn't really know what the later versions of Fedora do,
because I don't use it.  But when I was hunting for a Distro that suited
me, I did run across it.

Note, the only reason I pointed out Konqueror is because I know you use
it, otherwise you wouldn't be running Kubuntu.  Or are you a real geek
who just uses the CLI all the time?  No, if that were the case you
wouldn't be using Kubuntu in the first place.
