As tom I ran mkisofs -R -o tom.iso /home/tom and burnt the iso.  It fit on
one cd. Apparently when I put it back I made a mistake.  I have just run
chown -R tom:tom tom from /home and then chown -R tom:tom .* from
/home/tom and now everything works.
