For whatever it's worth, I'm writing this message using icedove, and there are currently 96179 messages in my inbox. Sorting by thread takes 60 seconds or so, but everything else is pretty quick (i have a high-bandwidth connection to the IMAP mailserver). In the past, I've occasionally been up over 200,000 messages in a single folder without any problem (other than increased slowness when doing things like sorting and/or searching).
