Back then Ubuntu came with 2 discs.  One was a live-cd the other the
install CD.  The installer was a slightly modified version of the Sarge
installer and is the same as Ubuntu uses for their Alternate
Installation CD.

I didn't really like it because I have this thing against gnome.  I had
no idea that there were alternatives, but it ran well, and piqued my
interest.  In the documentation for that distribution there are links to
Debian that said if you wanted to learn more about the system to consult
the Debian documentation.

Since that time, Ubuntu has moved more and more away from Debian,
although I must admit the systems are very similar, surely because
Ubuntu still uses Debian as a base.

Pretty much.  You still need to create the VM, but it's simple to do,
especially with the auto-generators that are available on the net.
