Is you i386 box different from you AMD box?
Yes they are two separate boxes......
Can you ping one from the
other on you L(ocal)AN?
They are not networked to each other.
I found that my new ASUS mother board for my
new AMD cpu had an Ethernet chip that's not yet supported in Debian.
The chip was detected by the installer but there was not a visible
error message that the LAN was not found. I solved the problem by
installing an old ethernet card for which drivers were available and
moving the ethernet cable.
Hmmmm...... I bought an ATA drive because I was worried a SATA drive would
not be seen by the OS. But I did not think the ethernet card could be off
limits as well. But it maybe OK because the old box internet link was not
quite right when I first booted it. So maybe the next time I fire up the box
the network link will be OK as it now is with the old box after rebooting
the cable box.
I am downloading the AMD64 DVD image. I will upgrade the install on the new
machine with this, Then I will have gnome etc and will be able to mess with
the internet connection a bit more easily on the new box. Here are the specs

Does any one know if a Realtek ALC653 is supported by Debian?
If it doesn't work because of the network card it would be nice if someone
could recommend a network card that is guaranteed to be seen by Debian.
