Is you i386 box different from you AMD box? Can you ping one from the
other on you L(ocal)AN? I found that my new ASUS mother board for my
new AMD cpu had an Ethernet chip that's not yet supported in Debian.
The chip was detected by the installer but there was not a visible
error message that the LAN was not found. I solved the problem by
installing an old ethernet card for which drivers were available and
moving the ethernet cable.
